Mastering Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk Inventor LT is definitely exhaustive in its subjects within Autodesk , but not necessarily in its true understanding of the program. Everything pertinent to 3D modeling is covered in the first half of the book, but surprisingly drawings aren’t covered until chapter A few very important notes if you plan to teach yourself this program: You absolutely have to have at least a basic understanding of modeling programs to begin with.

Many of the fundamentals are glossed over assuming that you are either not new to Autodesk or have used another modeling program such as SolidWorks or Pro Engineer.

This doesn’t include AutoCAD. If you’ve only used AutoCAD before, this may be the wrong book to start with. Also, there is basically no mention of difference between Inventor and Inventor LT so the vast majority of this book probably doesn’t apply to people without Inventor Professional. What this book is used for is either a reference for current Autodesk users or as a training manual to take the Autodesk certification test.

It is pages long so you’ll not be reading every last word. The vast majority of the book centers on specific walkthrough examples from certain sections of the program such as sketching, basic modeling, sheet metal, assemblies and so on.

One of the best pieces of advice Waguespack gives is the idea behind fully constraining sketches and creating complex parts and feature from basic shapes.

He continues to show how to do this throughout the book. My main issue with the book is its inability to give you an intuitive feel for how to make something yourself. The walkthroughs are detailed and incredibly well written and are easy to follow. But there are no design exercises giving you the reigns to see how YOU would get from sketch to 3D model. It is more of a giant set of tutorials than anything resembling a textbook, which is fine if you aren’t just teaching yourself.

If you’re on line looking for a author that knows how to teach, how to empathize with beginners while relating to professionals, you’ve found him. Curtis Waguespack has the ability to articulate, even the most complex issues, in a conceptually manageable way. Curtis Waguespack starts with the basics but not with a “dumb-it-down” approach.

He starts into the complex, keeping in mind his comprehensive goal of your eventual thorough understanding of the software and it’s capabilities.
